10 Celebrities who speak French fluently
Hey there! Bonjour!
If you have read my article 10 reasons to speak French, you would know how much I love seeing people speak different languages in a movie. Michael Fassbender speaking, French, Spanish and German in X-men was absolutely awesome. But did you know that various celebrities can speak French fluently? I find really inspiring that most of them not only speak French but are also able to play French parts in movies see one of my favorite in the list below
1) Hugh Laurie
Dr. House certainly isn't the definition of "fluent" but he can really pull it off! The British actor uses French cues all across his eight years playing the sarcastic American doctors and generally uses French as a comic relief, as seen during this speech:
2) Diane Krüger
German actress Diane Krüger has one of the best French accent I have heard. Fluent in various other languages, she has even played French characters in movies due to her flawless pronunciation.
3) Joseph Gordon-Lewitt
In the movie "The Welk" we discover Gordon-Lewitt in the skin of French Funambule Philippe Petit. But that was far from being the actor's first contact with French! Indeed, Joseph calls himself a Francophile, passionate by French poetry. He received a special Wire-walking training by Petit, but also intensely practiced his French to avoid sounding like the typical American faking French accent. Various dialogues are conducted in French and Gordon-Lewitt, manages to give the cue to French actors with brio.
4) Jodie Foster
Here's another fantastic example! Jodie Foster speaks English since very young and is therefore able to replicate French accent to perfection. Though she isn't as accustomed to French cinema has Krüger, she has played various little parts over the years, including the movie "A very long engagement" (un long dimanche de fiançailles"
5) John Malkovich:
John Malkovich has lived in France for ten years and still has a house there. It's no surprise then how he can speak French so well. The actor said repeatedly how scared he was to play the part of Javert in Les Misérables (no, not the musical!) but he did a tremendous job, knowing that he was surrounding but a cast of French actors. I also encourage you to watch this version of Les Misérables, my all-time favorite.
6) Lily-Rose Depp
French American Lily-Rose Depp, the first born of French singer Vanessa Paradis and Johnny Depp can do more than just speaks French: she's a perfect bilingual. Growing up in France certainly helped! At only 16 she now has a career of her own, as did her mother before her.
7) Bradley Cooper
In his 2015 movie, Bradly cooper stars as a chef who has received two Michelin's stars and wants to do the impossible: get a third one. In real life, Cooper loves cooking, which he explains by his mother's Italian family. During the promotion of the movie, the actor answered interviews in French and discussed his passion for gastronomy with the journalist, with a very nice American accent...
8) Kristin Scott-Thomas
The English actress is perhaps more famous in France than she is in America. But I have no doubt that you have seen her face before. ( The Horse Whisperer anyone?) Funny enough, she often plays the role of British or American characters in French movies and fakes a French accent in some of her American parts. (Confessions of a Shopaholic). She can actually speak a fluent, accentless French though:
The Lebanese is singer more than fluent in French! Him and his family stayed in Paris during his childhood years and Mika attended French school before moving to London. His song "Elle me dit" was meant to be a unique version for his French audience but got so popular that the singer agreed to record an English version of it. A few more French songs were added. Mika is now a member of the jury of The Voice France.
10) Evangeline Lilly
The Canadian actress discovered in Lost gave various interviews in French. More famous for her major roles in the Ant-Man and The Hobbit (2&3) she also shares the screen with French actor Romain Duris in Afterwards.
