The key benefits of learning languages online - Testimonials
Bonjour à tout le monde !
I have previously talked about the benefits of learning a language on Skype, but frankly, I was seeing this from my own point of view. The teachers. Of course, most of my reasons for teaching online are common to my students, such as no commuting, the ability to find the right person online among a much larger community and so on.
But, this article would not be complete without the actual testimonial of some students. My students actually, I didn't have to go really far. (or maybe I did since they are located all across the globe, from Brazil to Australia, going through Europe and Asia.) Here are their comments and remarks :
"I enjoy the flexibility to be able to learn from any location. And I like the specialized lessons that match my level - I feel it has helped build my confidence further in grasping a new language. "
"I take online lessons for a long time. I started to talk with native speakers by Skype when I was learning English and French. It was really interesting and an enriching experience. So I decided to find professional teachers (native speakers) on special online teaching platforms. It was cool and easy. It's good economy of time and money when you can do a lesson at home, at the same time you don't need to print textbooks and other necessary materials. It's convenient also while you are traveling or on a business trip. You can continue taking lessons everywhere! Nowadays in our busy days, it's extremely important to find one more time resource while you save time on the road to take face-to-face lessons. An experienced teacher and good internet connection - that's what you need to get a new sufficient knowledge."
"I want to learn from a native speaker and that there are not many private French teachers around me, so I think going online increases the number of options available."
"Learning online suits my busy lifestyle. I can take lessons at home or work as long as I have internet. I have taken face to face private lessons before but I don't think there is much difference in quality between skype lessons and IRL lessons."
As you can see, there are recurring reasons as to why some students choose to learn French online. I think the world is evolving in a way that we are not ashamed to outsource a service to find the most suitable one.
First, learning a language from a Native is a massive asset (Hey, I learned English with French teachers for years and you can still tell today).
Second, Alliance Française and other associations might not be able to offer you a tailored service, something based on you, your needs or simply adapt to your strengths and weaknesses. A teacher with the capacity to understand that will also help a lot. I have worked in places where the curriculum had to be followed at all cost and for some people it simply is debilitating. Understand what you teach and the person in front of you for best results.
Finally, the digital era is here and it's mainly for the best. Sure, we sometimes feel that technology separates us from the ones already around (ever felt like the person texting in front of you, wasn't really here?) but at the same time, it helps bring together like-minded people from all over the world, people who share interests and can get along even though a whole ocean or continent separates them.
I will give you one last tip: don't be in a rush. Find someone you get along with, try different methodology and tell your teachers / tutors how you feel. Too much grammar? Do you need different material? They should be here to help and support you, especially find the tools that best match your learning style!
