5 French movies with a plot twist
Hello and bonjour!
For many us, watching movies is an active part of the learning process. I always recommend movies to my students, even beginners. It doesn’t matter if you are stuck reading the subtitles your ear will appreciate the practice and you will still end up learning and thing or two.
Today, I want to share 5 French movies that have surprised many by their plot twists and surprising endings.
A la folie... pas du tout (He loves me, he loves me not)
This movie absolutely amazed me. I won’t spoil it, but there is more to it than meets the eye. As I am not a fan of rom-com myself, I waited patiently through the first half and wasn’t disappointed.
I recommend it to anyone under the charm of the lovely Audrey Tautou!
Le Prénom (What's in a name?)
For a movie about the name of an unborn baby, there certainly is a lot of action, drama! The plot twist is absolutely beautiful, and the movie carried by a set of actors that won't leave anything unsaid... I loved how the concept of respecting your loved ones' opinion was blown up and how these friends unapologetically clash each other.
Looking for a simple yet masterfully acted? Do yourself a favor and go watch Le Prénom.
La Môme (La vie en rose)
There might not be a particular movie in the biopic of Edith Piaf but getting to know the singer's life, it’s ups and downs from her modest beginning to the most prestigious places, was quite a choc for most. Interesting, touching and fascinating, la Môme has a lot to offer.
This movie will be a great introduction to the most iconic French singer of La vie en rose
I know, that’s three movies including Marion Cotillard, but this one is a masterpiece. If you enjoyed La môme, Cotillard and La vie en rose, give it a shot. In all fairness, this is certainly the only rom-com I still enjoy watching. Fun, corrosive and overall entertaining, it has one of the best monolog of all time, delivered by the talented (and handsome!) Guillaume Canet. Rather than one ending, it chose to have two, letting you decide where the "twist" lies.
Try watching this one on a gloomy night with your best friend or better yet, your partner in crime!
Again, the plot twist might not be the most memorable thing about the Artist but the last second does feature the whole picture under a different light. (I didn’t get it at first and thought that thing done on purpose wasn’t done on purpose...-sight) Anyway, this homage to the silent movies was nominated for 10 Oscar and got plenty of advertisement but if you haven’t watched it yet, try and give it a chance!
This beautiful piece tends to be a little long for a silent movie but the story - and history - of the movie industry is fascinating and will please anyone nostalgic from the old days of Holywood!
