10 New icons of French cinema
Bonjour et Bienvenue !
After my last article about 5 French movies to watch, I decided to make a list of 10 French actors (or almost French!) to keep an eye on. Some have already won awards and some haven't just yet, but all of them, and their movies (listed) are definitely worth the look!
1) Matthias Schoenaerts
Where: In Jacques Audiard's incredible De Rouille et d'os (Of Rust and bones) in which he won the Cesar award for best masculine actor, a first for a Belgian actor. He was revealed in Bullhead and has sinced moved to foreign movies as in Guillaume Canet's Blood Ties with its mix cast of American and French actors (Marion Cotillard, Mila Kunis, Zoe Saldana or Clive Owen).
2) Barbara Bolotner
Where: In the very serious Malavita by Luc Besson and the hilarious Mince Alors! by Charlotte De Turckheim.
3) Pierre Niney
Where: (Obvisously) The biopic on Yves Saint Laurent by Jalil Lespert which made him the youngest ever to receive aCesar award. Or try the light comedy 20 ans d'écart by David Moreau.
4) Clara Ponsot
Where: discovered in Les Infidèles by Emmanuelle Bercot, she has since participated in 5 TV movies from the drama saga Les Dames.
5) Raphaël Personnaz
Where: The must-watch La Princesse de Montpensier for anyone passionate about the ante-revolution France by Bertrand Tavernier and a massive cast, with oh-too-rare Gaspard Ulliel.
6) Ana Girardot
Where: In Simon Werner a disparu... and in the original French serie Les revenants, if you haven't watched it yet, I can assure you that it's better than the American spin off (and that usually is true of any French original movie that Hollywood claims).
7) Pio Marmaï
Where: Two gorgeous movies: Le premier jour du reste de ta vie and D'amour and d'eau fraîche. Pio was nominated to the Cesar for both movies and deserved it!
8) Izia Higelin
Where: In Mauvaise Fille by Patrick Mille which earned her the Cesar for best Feminine hope, or listen to her second album So much trouble.
9) Salim Kechiouche
Where: La Vie d'Adèle, most certainly as well as Paris à tout prix. Though he has been around for some twenty years, Salim surely deserves to shine beyond France.
10) Alice Belaïdi
Where: Among the grandiose cast of Homosapienne with Isabelle Adjani, Géraldine Nakache, Leïla Bekhti, Alice Taglioni or Sylvie Testud, some of France's best actress of the decade. Or, the best comedy of 2012, Kaïra by Maïwenn.
Here you go! 10 gorgeous and talented actors and actresses to follow for a broader, better French culture. You might want to check their movies as well!
