I am finally settled in Barcelona. I arrived over two weeks ago and started looking for a place. I moved into a lovely room right in the center (Barrio Gotico) last week and started work again immediately.
I must say that the lifestyle offered by the city is more than pleasing: after four years in Malaysia, where strolling along the streets is near impossible, the atmosphere here is very inviting!
I also understand more daily about my students' struggles: you can live in a place and hardly speak the language. Anytime I found myself in a touristic area people talk to me in English and I have had hardly any chances to even speak catalan!
In any case, I have joined several Meetup groups for language exchange. This is one of the most common tips that I give, find people to talk with. Any big city will have a language exchange groups and in general, people are more than happy to help you out.
Again, I try to follow my own advice, push myself and make efforts to break the language barrier, though there has been some evenings when, too tired to say a word of Spanish I simply answer in English.
But I will make more efforts and you should too: if you haven't done it yet, please register on Meetup and find folks who are also willing to discuss with you in your target language. Talking is definitely the best way to learn and cement your habits when learning a language.

A bientôt, hasta luego, fins aviat, see you soon!
